Home in one piece - goal achieved!

Chris Birch Dakar KTM

After a long delay in BA, I finally arrived home in one (slightly damaged) piece on Thursday. My ankle has swollen up on the flight but wasn't feeling too bad... still wanted to get it checked out. It is now in a cast awaiting a specialist appointment next week!

But apart from that it is great to be home with a huge sense of satisfaction at having finish my first Dakar Rally. Now have some forced time off a bike, and hopefully soon enough I will be heading into 2012 season in South Africa!

Chris finished Dakar!!

6 months preparation, 1 trip to Namibia, 15 days, 13 stages, 2 crashes and a whole lot of determination... worth it, as Chris finished his first Dakar Rally today!

He is pretty stoked, a bit sore, heading for bath and beer, but very happy to have finished.

Chris did fantastically well and despite a crash that took him an hour to fix his bike, and another crash so close to the finish that knocked him out and left him rather dazed and injured, he pushed and pushed, skulled back a cup of concrete and finished in 27th overall.

Auction bike SOLD!

The Dakar is nearly done, and the auction bike has been sold!

Thank you to the lucky bidder, we will get some pics of the handover soon!

Thank you also to KTM NZ, Red Bull, Fox, Hyde, Sandpit, Epic Events, Kiwi Rider and ilabb for donating their products and services to the cause.

This goes a massive way to covering the cost of the rental bike Chris has nearly finished with!

Last day of Dakar!

The last day of Dakar is upon us! Just a 250-ish km liaison section with a 30km special stage in between and then it is all over. Hope Chris makes it through no problems, will probably be a bit sore after his crash, but as lots of people have commented online, he is pretty tough and I know 'not made of sugar' and am sure he can bring home his first Dakar finishers medal on Thursday!

Fingers crossed ...

Stage 13 video

Once again Robbie Gordon makes highlights with a MASSIVE crash!

When you watch the bikes go across the dunes, you get a sense of what these guys have been through for 13 days with one more to go!
